EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a dramatic moment of heroism and teamwork as a RAF search and rescue Sea King from RAF Boulmer lands a man on the beach after plucking him out of the treacherous sea off Cullercoats. In the background, we see the inshore rescue craft being pulled ashore after overturning during the intense operation. The brave crew aboard the helicopter had been involved in a double rescue mission amidst high winds. It all began with a fishing boat capsizing, followed by the unfortunate incident of the rescue boat suffering the same fate. Amidst these perilous conditions, two men were saved thanks to the swift actions of this remarkable Sea King aircraft. Tragically, one man was unable to escape his entanglement with seaweed and rope from their ill-fated vessel and drowned. However, another survivor managed to swim back to shore while witnessing this incredible display of aerial prowess. Dated 22nd February 1981, this photograph serves as an enduring testament to both human resilience and military excellence. The Royal Air Force's unwavering commitment to saving lives is exemplified through moments like these when every second counts. This image not only showcases flying machinery but also highlights how small groups of people can come together harmoniously under extreme circumstances for a common goal - rescuing those in need.
