Alveston House in Alveston village near Stratford. It was sold in 1810 for iAY£39

Alveston House in Alveston village near Stratford. It was sold in 1810 for i£ 39, 500 which ended a family connection with peaceful Alveston which had lasted since 16th century days. It has been described by a very great expert as " a singularly perfect example of the Wren type of country house." Beautiful brickwork with dark blue headers and neat angle-dressings of stone, surrounds tall sash windows whose thin, elegant glazing bars replace sturdier ones or possibly mulions and transforms. There are the expected dormers in the high-pitched roof which displays the typical white - painted modillion cornice. The original entrance-front has gently-protecting wings: its central doorway retains a bracketed porch, but has been superseded by a columned, classic affair of mid-18th century date, elsewhere. The drive ends in a carriage-sweep before the " new" door from which one gazes down a lovely lime avenue supposed to be haunted and at the far end of which is all that remains of Alvestons old Norman church. It is believed to have been built by Thomas Peers, who married Elizabeth Newsham, of Chadshunt, Warwickshire. Inside the house, a simple, good Georgian staircase has taken the place of the sort that would have been commissioned by Thomas Peers. The views from the different rooms are charming, with lawn and River Avon, clipped yew hedges and stately trees near at hand, and further away the tower of Hampton Lucy Church, the Welcombe munument on its hill, and Sir Richard Hamiltons woods at Walton. 27th March 1966

Alveston House - A Timeless Gem in the Heart of Alveston Village

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the enchanting Alveston House, nestled in the picturesque village near Stratford. Steeped in history, this magnificent estate was sold for a mere £39 in 1810, severing a family's connection with this idyllic haven that had spanned centuries. Renowned as a masterpiece of Wren-style country houses, Alveston House exudes elegance and charm. Its beautiful brickwork boasts dark blue headers and exquisite angle-dressings of stone. Tall sash windows grace its façade, adorned with delicate glazing bars that replace their sturdier counterparts from yesteryears. The high-pitched roof features dormers and a white-painted modillion cornice—a signature characteristic. The original entrance-front is flanked by protective wings while an impressive mid-18th century columned porch now welcomes visitors at its center. As one approaches through the sweeping driveway, framed by hauntingly lovely lime trees, anticipation builds. At journey's end lies all that remains of Alvestons old Norman church—an awe-inspiring sight indeed. Inside this timeless abode awaits a simple yet elegant Georgian staircase—a departure from what Thomas Peers would have commissioned during his time here. Each room offers breathtaking views—manicured lawns merging seamlessly with the River Avon, majestic yew hedges standing tall against the backdrop of ancient trees. In the distance lie Hampton Lucy Church's tower and Sir Richard Hamiltons woods at Walton—the epitome of tranquility. Transport yourself to another era as you gaze upon this mesmerizing print captured on March 27th, 1966—a testament to enduring beauty and cherished memories etched within these walls.
