EDITORS COMMENTS
In a daring rescue operation, three one-armed bandits were saved from their marooned state at Clevedon, Somerset. The picturesque seaside town was left in awe as choppy seas made it too perilous to retrieve four other slot machines stranded on the pier. Piermaster Bernard Faraway, a seasoned expert in such matters, fearlessly led the mission to bring these beloved games back to safety. The dramatic events unfolded after a 200ft section of the pier collapsed during safety tests, cutting off access to the mainland for an entire week. As local authorities debated whether to repair or demolish the iconic 1000ft long pier, Bernard and his team took matters into their own hands. With determination etched on their faces, Bernard is captured alongside his trusted companions Roy Lovelock and Bill Cooke in this timeless photograph by Maurice Tibbles. Their heroic efforts symbolize not only a successful rescue but also embody the resilience of coastal communities. This snapshot from October 23rd, 1970 serves as a reminder of Clevedon's rich history and its unwavering spirit in times of adversity. These slot machines may be mere objects of entertainment, but they hold sentimental value for many who have spent countless hours spinning their reels along this charming arcade. As we gaze upon this image today, let us remember those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to preserve our cherished memories and keep our traditions alive.
