The Militiamen were the result of The Military Training Act 1939 which was an Act of Parliament passed by the Conservative administration on 26 May 1939, in a period of international tension that led to World War II. The Act applied to males aged 20 and 21 years old who were to be called up for six months full-time military training, and then transferred to the Reserve..
Men called up were to be known as militiamen to distinguish them from the regular army. To emphasise this distinction, each man was issued with a suit in addition to a uniform. The intention was for the first intake to undergo six months of basic training before being discharged into an active reserve. They would then be recalled for short training periods and attend annual camps.
There was one registration under the Act, of the first cohort of liable males, on Saturday 3 June 1939, and call-up for these men followed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Memory Lane Prints takes us back to a significant moment in history - the training of militiamen on 27th July 1939 at Oswestry camp. As tensions escalated and World War II loomed, the Conservative administration passed The Military Training Act 1939, which called upon males aged 20 and 21 for six months of full-time military training. In this image, we see these young men proudly parading at Oswestry camp, with classes on various types of anti-aircraft guns taking place in the background. To distinguish them from the regular army, each militiaman was issued both a uniform and a suit. After completing their initial training period, they would be transferred to an active reserve but were expected to attend short training periods and annual camps when summoned. The significance of this photograph lies not only in its depiction of dedicated individuals preparing for war but also as a reminder of the immense sacrifices made during that time. It serves as a poignant tribute to those who answered their nation's call amidst uncertainty and fear. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, let us remember the bravery exhibited by these young men who stood ready to defend their country against an impending global conflict. May their courage inspire future generations never to take peace for granted and always strive towards unity and understanding among nations.
