By Christmas 1944 the food situation was deteriorating in Guernsey and Mr Ernest Stead
By Christmas 1944 the food situation was deteriorating in Guernsey and Mr Ernest Stead, after reading cash and carry in British restaurants in England, conceived the idea of running a cash and carry feeding centre to which people bought their own foodstuffs. The people bought 2 on macaroni, 2 oz meat and half pound of potatoes per week, plus whatever root vegetables they could, this was made into soup and sold for 7 and a half chillings per quarter.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a significant moment in history during the challenging times of World War II. The image showcases Mr Ernest Stead, a compassionate individual who played an instrumental role in alleviating the food crisis faced by the people of Guernsey in 1944. As Christmas approached that year, the situation had worsened, leaving Guernsey residents struggling to find sustenance. Inspired by cash and carry establishments he had seen in British restaurants across England, Mr Stead conceived a brilliant idea - establishing a cash and carry feeding center. Here, individuals could purchase their own food supplies to sustain themselves. The rations were meager but vital for survival: two ounces of meat, two portions of macaroni, half a pound of potatoes per week, along with any root vegetables they could acquire. These humble ingredients were transformed into nourishing soup which was then sold at seven and a half chillings per quarter. In this snapshot from May 27th, 1944, we witness Mr Stead examining his ingenious creation - a soup boiler crafted by elevating an ordinary bath on bricks with a fireplace formed underneath it. This improvised contraption symbolizes resourcefulness amidst adversity as well as Mr Stead's unwavering determination to provide sustenance for his community. This evocative print serves as both a testament to human resilience during wartime and an homage to the unsung heroes like Mr Ernest Stead who selflessly dedicated themselves to ensuring others' well-being despite facing
