EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic print captures the inauguration of the new Surrey training camp for part-time firefighters, a significant development in bolstering fire safety measures during World War II. The image showcases an important moment as Mr. William Mabane MP, who has recently been appointed Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Food, engages in conversation with Fire Force cooks before commencing his new role. Visitors are seen exploring the state-of-the-art training facility, symbolizing the growing importance placed on equipping part-time firemen with essential skills and knowledge to protect their communities. Among those present are distinguished individuals such as Sir Harold Scott, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Security; Mr. M. H. Bolt, Chief Regional Fire Officer of the South Eastern Region; and Mr. H. W. Shawcross KC, Deputy Regional Commissioner of the South Eastern region. The photograph also highlights two remarkable firewomen: V. M. Perry and Pragnell, who served admirably during recent air raids on Canterbury using a Canadian Red Cross Mobile Kitchen generously donated by Quebec. Their dedication is evident as they swiftly provided hot teas to weary firefighters and prepared hundreds of nourishing meals within minutes of arriving at disaster-stricken areas. Taken in June 1942, this image from Memory Lane Prints serves as a poignant reminder of both the resilience displayed by these brave men and women during wartime and the ongoing efforts made to ensure public safety amidst challenging circumstances.
