A very interesting exercise, involving some three to four hundred Home Guards

A very interesting exercise, involving some three to four hundred Home Guards, recently took place in a mining area in the North of England.
10:30 hours on 3rd August 1940 was zero hour and as the battle developed, gun post crews in particular showed considerable initiative in withdrawing from various positions after harassing the enemy.
It was assumed at one period that enemy paratroops, distinguished by steel helmets, had landed a
few miles outside a town and had forced their way to its suburbs where pitched battles were fought.
Nearly all the men in this district are miners and together with their employers they took part in the exercise Street fighting in the suburbs of the town, the steel helmeted attackers are met by the defending forces.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a truly intriguing exercise that unfolded in a mining area of the North of England during the 1940s. With an impressive turnout of approximately three to four hundred Home Guards, this event showcased their dedication and commitment to defending their homeland. At precisely 10:30 hours on August 3rd, 1940, zero hour commenced, setting the stage for an intense battle. As the engagement progressed, it became evident that the gun post crews displayed remarkable resourcefulness by tactically withdrawing from various positions after effectively harassing the enemy. Reports suggested that enemy paratroops had landed just outside a nearby town and managed to infiltrate its suburbs. This led to fierce pitched battles between these steel helmeted attackers and our valiant defenders. It is worth noting that most men in this district were miners who courageously joined forces with their employers to participate in this exercise. The image depicts street fighting erupting in the town's suburbs as our defending forces confront these invaders head-on. The determination and resilience exhibited by both civilian volunteers and militia personnel are truly commendable. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of life on the home front during World War II when ordinary citizens transformed into extraordinary defenders. It encapsulates not only their unwavering spirit but also highlights their willingness to take up arms for the greater good of their nation's security.
