EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a vintage advertisement for Drumhead Cigarettes, dating back to 1923-26. The rectangular, convex counter card features a striking combination of gold and blue as its background. At the center, a shield-shaped plaque with the outline of a drum and crossed sticks immediately catches the eye. Positioned below it is a pack of Drumhead cigarettes, while on either side are small silhouettes of drummers facing towards the center. The text boldly reads "PLAYERs // DRUMHEAD" // CIGARETTES // 10 // FOR // 4D. // 20 // FOR // 8D". This promotional offer highlights the affordability and value that these cigarettes provided during that era. On the reverse side of this historical artifact, we find remnants of support along with a handwritten note confirming its origin in 1923. Additionally, there is an accompanying label from Mardons Window Novelties - specialists in embossed showcards, varnishing services, gelatiners & frame making - based in Bristol and London. This photograph not only captures an intriguing piece of advertising history but also reflects elements such as military bands and uniformed drummers associated with Nottingham's rich cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of John Player & Sons' contribution to tobacco manufacturing during that time period without mentioning any commercial use or affiliation with the company itself.
