Blacksmiths shop at Godolphin Cross, Cornwall. Early 1900s

A group of men outside the blacksmiths shop at Herland Cross in Godolphin Cross. On the left is George Reynolds standing on a granite block used for fixing iron bands to waggon wheels. He spent many years abroad mining in South America, possibly Chile. Astride the horse is Harry Magor (possibly Meagor) of Carleen. He was a teamster who drove teams of up to thirty horses taking timber to boatyards and mines. He carried the large poles used at Poldhu, Mullion in Marconis experimental wireless station (in 1901). In the donkey trap is Streamer John, a tin streamer who extracted tin from the tailings of mine-workings and supplemented his income by selling vegetables from his trap. The blacksmith is William Rowe with his dog Ben. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1900s, capturing a moment in time at the bustling blacksmith's shop in Godolphin Cross, Cornwall. A group of hardworking men stand outside the shop, each with their own unique story. On the left side of the frame stands George Reynolds, a seasoned miner who spent years abroad in South America, possibly Chile. His presence exudes strength and resilience as he leans against a granite block used for fixing iron bands to wagon wheels. Astride a majestic horse is Harry Magor (possibly Meagor) from Carleen. Known as a skilled teamster, Harry would drive teams of up to thirty horses, transporting timber to boatyards and mines. Notably, he played an instrumental role in delivering large poles used at Marconi's experimental wireless station in Poldhu, Mullion during its inception year of 1901. Intriguingly seated within a donkey trap is Streamer John - an enterprising tin streamer who extracted valuable tin from mine tailings. To supplement his income further, he sold fresh vegetables from his trusty trap. Lastly but certainly not least important is William Rowe - the blacksmith himself - accompanied by his loyal dog Ben. With sparks flying and muscles flexing under his skilled hands, William expertly shapes metal into useful tools for the local community. Preserved through time by an unknown photographer's lens, this remarkable image offers us glimpses into Cornwall's rich
