This print captures a momentous event in the history of Cornwall. On the 25th of April, 1889, amidst the picturesque town of Redruth, over 600 miners came together for a peaceful demonstration that would forever change their fate. Men, women, and even children stood united against the imminent threat to East Pool Mine caused by the stopping of Wheal Agar engine. In this powerful image, we witness a sea of determined faces as they rally for their livelihoods and community. The resilience and unity displayed by these brave individuals are truly awe-inspiring. Their message was clear: they demanded justice and protection for their beloved mine. Thanks to their unwavering determination, Thomas Bedford Bolitho - Member of Parliament for St Ives constituency - took notice. Recognizing the urgency and importance of their cause, he promptly arranged a conference with representatives from among these courageous miners. The outcome was nothing short of remarkable; Bolitho directed that the engine be started without delay. This decision not only saved East Pool Mine from flooding but also served as an emblematic victory for Cornish politics.
