Early 20th Century Mining

EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in this remarkable print from 1903, we are transported back to the depths of the Blue Hills Mine in St Agnes, Cornwall. A miner is depicted undertaking overhand stoping, a challenging and dangerous task that required immense skill and bravery. Perched on a ladder, he meticulously chips away at the rock face while his trusty candle helmet illuminates his path. The flickering glow of the candle not only provided light but also served as a symbol of hope amidst the darkness and uncertainty that permeated these underground tunnels. A supervisor stands below, holding another candle, offering guidance and support to ensure safety during this arduous process. This snapshot offers us a glimpse into the lives of those who toiled tirelessly beneath our feet during Cornwall's mining heyday. The mine was operated by Penhalls at that time, an influential name synonymous with Cornish mining history. Photographer John Charles Burrow has expertly captured both the physicality and camaraderie inherent in such perilous work. His lens immortalizes an era when men risked their lives daily for precious minerals deep within Earth's crust. As we observe this poignant image today at Royal Cornwall Museum, let us reflect upon the courage displayed by these miners - unsung heroes whose contributions shaped our region's identity during the early 20th century.
