Unearthed Treasures - A Glimpse into Roman History in Cornwall

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases a remarkable collection of Roman coins discovered during the 1939 summer excavations at Trevelgue Head, also known as Porth Island, in St Columb Porth, Cornwall. The diligent efforts of C. K. Croft Andrew led to the unearthing of eighty-eight ancient coins, five of which are beautifully displayed here. From left to right, we observe Constantius II Caesar (323-337), Constantine II Caesar (317-337), Valens (364-378), Constantinopolis (330 -341), and Urbs Roma (330 - 335 AD). Each coin tells its own story and provides valuable insights into the lives and reigns of these emperors. These copper alloy treasures were found within Hut 1 and its surrounding area during excavation. They serve as tangible evidence of the Romans' presence in this region during the 4th century AD. The intricate busts on each coin depict powerful figures who once ruled over vast territories with soldiers by their side. As we gaze upon this snapshot from history, we cannot help but marvel at the victory achieved by archaeologists who preserved these nummi for future generations to appreciate. This extraordinary hoard is now part of Royal Cornwall Museum's archiveā€”a testament to our enduring fascination with antiquity.
