EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases Samuel John Govier, a trailblazing photographer in Cornwall during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The image captures him on his bicycle, with his trusty photographic box securely fastened to the front. It is believed that this photograph was taken in the early 1900s when Govier relied on his bicycle or a horse-drawn van for transportation before establishing his studio in Chacewater in 1907. The picture exudes an air of nostalgia as it transports us back to a bygone era. Govier's dapper attire reflects the fashion trends of Victorian and Edwardian times, complete with a stylish cap adorning his head. His impressive moustache adds an extra touch of character to this remarkable portrait. The scenic backdrop features a charming country road flanked by stone walls and hedges, providing insight into the picturesque landscapes that characterized rural Cornwall at that time. This snapshot not only offers glimpses into transport history but also serves as a testament to Govier's dedication and passion for photography. After retiring from photography, Govier embarked on another venture as a grocer in Chacewater where he resided until the end of his days. This evocative print pays homage to both Samuel John Govier's pioneering spirit and the rich heritage of Cornwall through its lens capturing moments frozen in time.
