Calenick, Cornwall. Early 1900s
A view showing Calenick bridge on the left and a thatched cottage with a slated dormer extension and a garden enclosed by two chained standing stones in the foreground. The clock tower of the smelting house can be seen in the background. A leisurely lady in the foreground by the cottage, holding an umbrella which is presumably being used as a parasol. Taken from the Truro side. The clock tower belonged to an important tin smelting works which operated throughout most of the 18th and 19th centuries before closing in 1891. The tin ore was brought from the local mines, and the finished ingots of white tin were shipped from Truro. Photographer: Unknown
