Fowey to Polruan Ferry, Fowey, Cornwall. January 1993

Paul Toms at the helm of the Fowey to Polruan ferry, which has been bought by his father Allen Toms who owns Toms Boatyard in Polruan. The ferry was motorised just before the First World War but can be dated back to the 16th century when a rowing boat plied the route. This purchase by the Toms family means that they own both ferries across Fowey harbour, for they ve owned the Bodinnick car ferry, half a mile upriver, since 1975. Photographer: Jonathan Barker

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken in January 1993, we are transported to the enchanting town of Fowey in Cornwall. The image captures a significant moment for the Toms family as Paul Toms takes charge at the helm of the iconic Fowey to Polruan ferry. This historic vessel, dating back to the 16th century when it was just a humble rowing boat, has been recently acquired by Allen Toms, owner of Toms Boatyard in Polruan. The photograph showcases not only the rich maritime heritage of this region but also highlights an important milestone for the Toms family. With their ownership of both ferries that traverse Fowey harbor - including the Bodinnick car ferry since 1975 - they have become custodians of these vital transportation links. As we gaze upon this scene, our eyes are drawn to various elements that add depth and character to this picturesque setting. The weathered steps leading down towards moored boats evoke a sense of nostalgia and beckon us towards further exploration. A lifebelt hangs nearby, serving as a reminder of safety amidst adventure on these Cornish waters. This remarkable photograph captured by Jonathan Barker encapsulates not only a slice of history but also portrays how water transport has shaped life in Lanteglos and its surrounding areas. It is through such images that we can appreciate and celebrate Cornwall's unique charm and enduring connection with its maritime past.
