Loe Pool, Helston, Cornwall. 1920s

A 64 gun frigate was wrecked here in 1782. Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots, given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the picturesque Loe Pool, Helston, Cornwall, circa 1920s. This stunning photograph print is a rare glimpse into the region's rich history and natural beauty. The tranquil waters of the pool seem to stretch out endlessly, surrounded by lush greenery and towering trees. But what makes this image truly special is its connection to a significant event in Cornish history. In 1782, a 64-gun frigate was wrecked on the rocks surrounding Loe Pool, leaving behind a lasting legacy that continues to fascinate locals and visitors alike. This image was taken by Major Arthur William Gill, an amateur photographer and Cornish enthusiast who traveled extensively throughout the county capturing its hidden gems on film. His unique quarter-plate slides were hand-painted with great skill, imbuing them with a warm glow that transports us back to another era. As part of his popular lectures on 'Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots', Major Gill shared these photographs with audiences across Cornwall and beyond. Today, we're fortunate enough to have access to this remarkable piece of Cornish heritage through the Royal Cornwall Museum's collection.
