Restormel Castle, Lanlivery Parish, Cornwall. 1914

A man standing on the bridge over the castle moat just outside the gatehouse. Restormel Castle is a well preserved example of a circular shell keep, a rare type of fortification built during a short period in the 12th and early 13th centuries. Such castles were built by converting a wooden motte and bailey castle through replacing the external palisade with a stone wall and filling the internal bailey with domestic stone buildings, clustered around the the inside of the wall to form a defensive bailey. The buildings are curved to fit into the shell keep. Photographer: Herbert Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the year 1914, capturing a moment of tranquility at Restormel Castle in Lanlivery Parish, Cornwall. The image showcases a man standing on the bridge that spans over the castle moat just outside the grand gatehouse. Restormel Castle is an exceptional example of a circular shell keep, a unique type of fortification constructed during a brief period between the 12th and early 13th centuries. These castles were created by transforming wooden motte and bailey structures into more robust stone walls, replacing external palisades. Inside the castle's protective wall lies a cluster of domestic stone buildings arranged along its curved shape, forming what is known as a defensive bailey. Photographed by Herbert Hughes, this remarkable shot allows us to appreciate both the architectural beauty and historical significance of Restormel Castle. Its well-preserved state transports us back to an era when such fortresses played vital roles in protecting lands and their inhabitants. Displayed within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection, this print offers viewers an opportunity to immerse themselves in Cornwall's rich heritage while marveling at the craftsmanship that went into constructing these medieval strongholds. Let this image serve as a reminder of our past and inspire future generations to cherish and preserve our cultural treasures for years to come.
