Road Steep Hill

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this powerful photograph taken in October 1990, we see a group of determined individuals standing at the top of the lorry escape lane on the St Austell to Lostwithiel road in Cornwall. The photo captures an important moment as local councillors from Lostwithiel engage in discussion with Robert Hicks MP about implementing weight restrictions on the hill leading into their town. The urgency behind this campaign becomes evident when we learn that numerous lorry crashes and tragic deaths have occurred at the bottom of this treacherous hill. The gravity of the situation is palpable as these community leaders gather to address a pressing issue that has plagued their town for far too long. From left to right, we see Peter Moore, Traffic and Safety Officer for Cornwall County Council; Mr Mannell, Chairman of Transportation Committee for Cornwall County Council; Dennis Hutchings, Deputy Mayor of Lostwithiel; Fran Dennison, Town Clerk of Lostwithiel; John Reed, Mayor of Lostwithiel; Robert Hicks MP representing South East Cornwall; Chief Inspector Smythe from Traffic Branch, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary; and Ralph Keam, District Councillor. Their united front sends a clear message - action must be taken urgently to prevent further accidents. Their efforts paid off as new sign improvements were passed by the County Transportation Committee just one week later. This poignant image serves as a reminder not only of past tragedies but also showcases how communities can come together to effect positive change.
