EDITORS COMMENTS
Caught in a tight squeeze: Restormel Road, Lostwithiel, Cornwall finds itself at a standstill as a low loader lorry carrying a massive diesel storage tank for the Restormel water works blocks the entire street. This March 1993 snapshot captures the frustration of local residents residing at Glentworth Terrace who have long complained about the constant stream of heavy lorries attempting to navigate this narrow road. The imposing sight of the lorry with its oversized cargo dwarfs everything in its path, including an innocent telegraph pole standing helplessly by. The photo serves as evidence of the ongoing struggle faced by communities when infrastructure development clashes with residential areas. However, this incident marked a turning point for Restormel Road and its weary inhabitants. Recognizing the urgent need for change, authorities took swift action within just a few years after this photograph was taken. A relief road stretching from Sweetshouse to the water works was constructed to alleviate traffic congestion and ensure smoother transportation routes. Photographer Jonathan Barker expertly captured both the chaos and hope that surrounded this pivotal moment in Lostwithiel's history. As we reflect on this image today, it stands as a testament to community resilience and proactive decision-making that ultimately transformed an inconvenience into progress.
