Lower Greadow Farmhouse, Luxulyan, Cornwall. 1972

Lower Greadow Farmhouse, showing the remains of a medieval monastery building which belonged to Tywardreath Priory. The farm is in Luxulyan Parish and the parish boundary runs close to the eastern side of the farm. According to 1888 and 1908 Ordnance Survey maps it was known as Lower Gready. Two nearby farms to the east were known as Middle Gready and Higher Gready, both of these being east of the parish boundary in Lanlivery Parish. At some time since then the word Gready has been changed to Greadow. A granite stone outside Higher Greadow Farm still reads Higher Gready Farm. An aerial view from Google Maps (2019) suggests that some of the remains have since been removed. Photographer: Charles Woolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this print of Lower Greadow Farmhouse, Luxulyan, Cornwall taken in 1972. The image showcases the remarkable remains of a medieval monastery building that once belonged to Tywardreath Priory. Nestled within Luxulyan Parish, the farm sits close to the eastern boundary of the parish. Interestingly, historical Ordnance Survey maps from 1888 and 1908 refer to it as Lower Gready, while two neighboring farms were known as Middle Gready and Higher Gready respectively. However, over time, the name has evolved into Lower Greadow. A fascinating glimpse into local history can still be found at Higher Greadow Farm where a granite stone proudly bears its original name - Higher Gready Farm. While this enchanting photograph captures an era long gone by, recent aerial views from Google Maps suggest that some alterations have been made to these historic remnants since then. Nonetheless, this snapshot allows us to appreciate the rich heritage and rural charm that defines Cornwall's countryside. Photographer Charles Woolf skillfully immortalized this scene with his lens, showcasing not only the beauty of nature but also highlighting agriculture's integral role in shaping Cornwall's landscape throughout centuries past.
