Fishing vessels putting to sea, Mevagissey, Cornwall. 1909
The Mevagissey fishing fleet putting to sea at high tide. Long oars are being used to manoeuvre the vessels out of the sheltered harbour to enable their sails to catch the wind. In the left middle ground of the picture are two young men in a rowing boat. One waves to the passing fishing vessel as the other sculls the boat with an oar at the stern. The lighthouse on Victoria Pier is just discernible above the sails in the background. Two fishing vessel sails can be seen above North Pier as they move into St Austell Bay. EDITORS COMMENTS
A glimpse of a bygone era in this stunning photograph print taken in Mevagissey, Cornwall in 1909. The fishing vessels are making their way out to sea at high tide, expertly maneuvered with long oars to position themselves for the wind-filled sails that will carry them across St Austell Bay. Amidst the bustling harbour scene, two young men can be seen rowing a small boat towards one of the departing vessels. The boy in front waves enthusiastically as his companion sculls steadily at the stern. In the background, the lighthouse on Victoria Pier rises above the sails like a sentinel guarding over this ancient fishing community. Two more vessels are visible above North Pier, their sails billowing with wind and purpose. This poignant image captures not only a moment of industry but also one of camaraderie and connection between these Cornish fishermen. Herbert Hughes' photograph is a testament to the rich maritime heritage of Mevagissey and its people. The Royal Cornwall Museum proudly presents this piece as part of our collection, offering a window into the past for all who cherish stories from Cornwall's storied history.
