EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1958, capturing a moment in time on East Street, Newquay, Cornwall. The image showcases the meticulous reconstruction of shop premises at 2 East Street, situated on the corner of East Street and Marcus Hill. W. C. Pearce and Sons (Contractors) Ltd can be seen diligently carrying out their work, with four dedicated builders present on site. Adjacent to these construction efforts is Miners Ltd, a Confectioners and Tobacconists store occupying the premises at 4 East Street. These two establishments together create a vibrant commercial scene within this Cornish town. Fast forward to 2019, and we witness how times have changed as new businesses now occupy these historic spaces. Oggy Oggy the Pasty Company has taken over number 2 East Street while Prego Prego coffee shop has found its home at number 4. Photographed by Charles Woolf, this snapshot not only captures an era of progress but also serves as a reminder of how towns evolve over time. It stands as a testament to the enduring nature of buildings that have witnessed generations come and go while adapting to meet modern needs. As we gaze upon this photograph print from Royal Cornwall Museum's collection, we are transported back in time; our imaginations filling in the sounds of bustling streets and envisioning life as it once was in Newquay all those years ago.
