Penzance Harbour, Cornwall. 1920s

View of Penzance harbour with a steamer at the Quay and St Marys church behind. Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots, given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the beauty of Penzance Harbour in Cornwall during the 1920s. The view showcases a bustling scene with a steamer docked at the Quay, while St Mary's church stands proudly in the background. This image is part of a glass lantern slide from Major Arthur William Gill's lecture titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots" which he presented to various groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. Major Gill was not only an amateur photographer but also a well-known figure in Cornwall and beyond during the 1920s and 1930s. His presentations included both still images and cine films, capturing stunning moments like this one for audiences to enjoy. What makes his work even more remarkable is that many of his quarter plate slides were hand-painted by himself, resulting in vivid colors that added depth and charm to each photograph. In this particular print, we can appreciate not only the picturesque harbor but also glimpse into maritime history with ships dotting its waters. It serves as a testament to Major Gill's talent for capturing significant moments in time through his lens. This print offers us a window into Penzance's past, reminding us of its rich heritage as an important port town on England's southwestern coast.
