A distant view of a procession crossing the dunes to the oratory for a service under Bishop Frere. St Pirans Oratory survives as an early Christian chapel with all four walls standing. It represents the supposed site where St Piran, an Irish saint came ashore and established a Christian centre of worship in the sixth or seventh centuries AD. The site has a documented entry in the Domesday book. There is a small nave, chancel and stone bench around much of the interior plus a cemetery. Situated on Penhale Sands, east of Perranporth, the Oratory has been subject to blown sands over the years. Excavations were carried out in 1835 and 1843 and then railings were erected around the site in the 1890s. In 1910 it was re-excavated and a concrete preserving structure constructed over it. A large number of burials were uncovered during the works. The concrete shell was largely demolished in 1980 and the chapel reburied. The site was re-excavated in 2014-2015. This print captures a distant view of Bishop Frere leading a solemn procession towards St Pirans Oratory in Perranzabuloe, Cornwall. The image transports us back to a time between 1923 and 1935 when this historic event took place. St Pirans Oratory, an early Christian chapel with its four walls intact, stands as a testament to the establishment of a Christian center by the Irish saint, St Piran himself. Located on Penhale Sands, east of Perranporth, the oratory has endured challenges over the years due to blown sands. In order to preserve its rich history and significance, excavations were carried out in 1835 and 1843. Subsequently, railings were erected around the site in the late 19th century for protection. In 1910, further excavation work was undertaken and a concrete structure was built over it for preservation purposes. The photograph also sheds light on Bishop Walter Frere (1863-1938), who served as Bishop of Truro from 1923 until 1935. His presence during this procession adds depth to our understanding of his role within the community at that time. This remarkable image not only provides us with insight into an important religious ceremony but also serves as a reminder of Cornwall's deep-rooted Christian heritage dating back centuries.
