By 1996 the bungalow had been much altered into two cottages and the cottage on the right named Bat Lodge. Cornishman, Robert Harvey (1847-1930) was a prominent producer in the nitrate industry of the late 1800s, making his fortune in Bolivia, Peru and Chile before returning to Cornwall in 1885. On his return, he purchased Trenowth Estate and invested in the Cornish tourism industry by going into partnership with architect Silvanus Trevail, George Hicks and John Jose to form the Cornish Hotels Company. He served as High Sheriff in both Devon and Cornwall towards the turn of the century and was knighted in 1901. He also served as President of the Royal Institution of Cornwall between 1901-1903. Sir Robert Harvey, a prominent figure in Cornish history, made his fortune as a successful producer in the nitrate industry during the late 1800s. His ventures took him to far-flung lands such as Bolivia, Peru, and Chile before he decided to return to his beloved Cornwall in 1885. Upon his homecoming, he acquired the magnificent Trenowth Estate. Eager to contribute to Cornwall's burgeoning tourism industry, Sir Robert joined forces with renowned architect Silvanus Trevail along with George Hicks and John Jose to establish the esteemed Cornish Hotels Company. This visionary partnership aimed to enhance Cornwall's appeal as a tourist destination. Beyond his entrepreneurial pursuits, Sir Robert Harvey held prestigious positions within society. He served as High Sheriff for both Devon and Cornwall around the turn of the century and received knighthood honors in 1901. Additionally, he assumed presidency over the esteemed Royal Institution of Cornwall from 1901 until 1903.
