Seen through entrance gate. On the right is the doorway to the chapel with the remains of an oak roof. Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots, given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect

This print takes us back in time to the picturesque village of Truthall, Sithney, Cornwall around 1925. Through the entrance gate, we catch a glimpse of the enchanting scenery that Major Arthur William Gill so beautifully captured with his camera. On the right side of the image stands an ancient chapel doorway, adorned with remnants of an oak roof that has weathered countless storms over the years. Major Gill was not only a Cornishman but also an accomplished amateur photographer who shared his love for Cornwall's historic beauty spots through lectures and presentations during the 1920s and 1930s. His expertise in both still photography and cine film made him well-known among various groups such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and even the London Cornish Society. What makes Major Gill's work truly remarkable is his unique approach to colorizing these quarter plate slides by hand. Each slide was meticulously painted by his own skilled hand, resulting in stunning visual effects that brought these scenes to life.
