Logan Rock, Treryn Dinas, Porthcurno, St Levan, Cornwall. 1898
A view of sheep on the rocks, near the Logan Rock at Treryn Dinas. Perched 30 metres above the sea, the naturally occurring piece of granite attracted tourists due to its ability to rock back and forth on the cliff top with the slightest touch. It was dislodged by a group of sailors in 1824 who were then forced to reposition it at their own expense. The headland of Treryn Dinas is also the site of an Iron Age promontory fort. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1898 transports us to the rugged coastline of Cornwall, specifically Logan Rock at Treryn Dinas. The image showcases a group of sheep fearlessly navigating the rocky terrain near this famous natural wonder. Perched an impressive 30 meters above the sea, Logan Rock is a naturally occurring piece of granite that has long fascinated tourists. What makes it truly unique is its ability to rock back and forth with just the slightest touch, adding an element of excitement for those who dare to interact with it. However, this intriguing landmark carries a story of controversy. In 1824, a group of sailors dislodged the Logan Rock in an ill-advised act. As punishment for their actions, they were forced to reposition it at their own expense. Beyond its geological marvels, Treryn Dinas also holds historical significance as the site of an Iron Age promontory fort. This headland offers visitors both natural beauty and glimpses into ancient civilizations. Captured by photographer Herbert Hughes over a century ago, this print serves as a timeless reminder of Cornwall's stunning coastlines adorned with majestic rock formations and towering cliffs. It invites us to appreciate nature's wonders while reflecting on our responsibility towards preserving them for future generations.
