A view of the gardens of Tregothnan House on an open day. Visitors are walking around the grounds. Tregothnan has been home to the Boscawen family since 1334. The house was rebuilt by Edward Boscawen (1787-1841), fourth Viscount and First Earl of Falmouth, near the site of an older mansion. Tregothnan has the largest historic garden in Cornwall. It is open to the public for one weekend every year. Photographer: Charles Woolf. Royal Cornwall Museum is the UK's Greatest Museum For Cornish Life & Culture. © RIC, photographer Charles Woolf

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the enchanting Garden at Tregothnan House in St Michael Penkivel, Cornwall, back in 1976. The image showcases a picturesque view of the gardens during an open day, with visitors leisurely strolling around the grounds. Tregothnan House has been cherished by the Boscawen family for centuries, dating all the way back to 1334. The house itself was reconstructed by Edward Boscawen (1787-1841), who held the titles of fourth Viscount and First Earl of Falmouth. It was built near the location of a previous mansion, adding to its rich historical significance. One notable feature that sets Tregothnan apart is its expansive historic garden - the largest in all of Cornwall. This lush oasis boasts an array of vibrant flora and meticulously manicured landscapes that have delighted visitors throughout generations. Although access to this magnificent estate is limited to one weekend per year when it opens its doors to the public, this photograph allows us a glimpse into its timeless beauty and tranquility. Captured by photographer Charles Woolf, this image serves as a testament to Tregothnan's enduring allure and reminds us why it remains such a treasured gem within Cornwall's cultural heritage.
