Harbour wall, Polkerris, Tywardreath, Cornwall. 1976

View along the stepped harbour wall towards the sea. Polkerris is on the west side of the Gribben promontory and on the east side of St Austell Bay. The view shows Napoleonic era cannons embedded in the harbour wall as bollards, which lends credence to one possible meaning of the name Polkerris - Fortified Cove. Polkerris has been part of the Rashleigh familys Menabilly Estate from the late 16th century and the estate built the half-moon quay in 1775 to help the seine fishing industry. By the 1870s, the industry was in decline. Photographer: Charles Woolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1976 takes us back in time to the picturesque harbour wall of Polkerris, Tywardreath, Cornwall. The image offers a breathtaking view along the stepped harbour wall towards the vast sea that stretches beyond. As we gaze at this scene, our attention is drawn to the fascinating historical detail embedded within the photograph. The presence of Napoleonic era cannons repurposed as bollards adds an intriguing layer of history and authenticity to this charming coastal village. It lends credence to one possible meaning of Polkerris - Fortified Cove - suggesting a rich heritage steeped in defense and protection. Polkerris has long been associated with the Rashleigh family's Menabilly Estate since the late 16th century. In their efforts to support local industries, they constructed a half-moon quay in 1775 specifically for the seine fishing industry which was thriving at that time. However, by the 1870s, this once-thriving trade had declined significantly. Photographer Charles Woolf expertly captures not only these historical elements but also showcases Cornish beauty through his lens. This print evokes a sense of tranquility and nostalgia as we imagine fishermen going about their daily routines against this stunning backdrop. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, let us appreciate both its aesthetic appeal and its ability to transport us into Cornwall's vibrant past – where fishing communities thrived amidst rugged landscapes and tales of resilience were etched into every
