EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the 1824 portrait of Charles Waterton, a renowned naturalist and eccentric British figure. Engraved on a steel plate and later tinted, this frontis piece is extracted from "Essays on Natural History" by Charles Waterton himself. The portrait was originally painted from life by Charles Wilson Peale when Waterton was 41 years old, just before the publication of his best-selling book "Wanderings in South America" in 1825. Charles Waterton's legacy as a conservationist is immortalized through this remarkable artwork. As the Squire of Walton Hall, he established one of the world's earliest nature preserves behind the walls of his estate. This sanctuary prohibited hunting and welcomed public visitors for leisurely enjoyment. A true visionary ahead of his time! Waterton's audacious exploits are legendary, including riding a caiman (a type of crocodile) and creating satirical taxidermy known as "Nondescript". His eccentricity knew no bounds but only added to his allure as an extraordinary individual. Paul D. Stewart masterfully captures the essence of this historical figure through his photography skills. With vibrant colors and intricate details, Stewart brings to life both the man and his passion for nature conservation. This print serves as a testament to Charles Waterton's immense contribution to science and environmental preservation during the 19th century. It encapsulates not only an era but also celebrates human ingenuity in protecting our planet's precious resources for future generations to cherish.
