1838 Jenny Orangutan which Darwin visited

January 1838, Jenny the first Orangutan in London zoo. Full publication details in image. On 28 March 1838, Charles Darwin came to the London Zoo to visit Jenny and was profoundly moved by the experience. He was struck by her understanding and emotional engagement with her keeper. Darwin wrote: " Let man visit Ouranoutang in domestication, hear expressive whine, see its intelligence when spoken (to); as if it understands every word said - see its affection. - to those it knew. - see its passion & rage, sulkiness, & very actions of despair;. and then let him boast of his proud preeminence. Man in his arrogance thinks himself a great work, worthy the interposition of a deity. More humble and I believe true to consider him created from animals"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history when Charles Darwin encountered Jenny, the first Orangutan at the London Zoo in January 1838. The image showcases an intimate connection between man and primate, as Darwin was deeply moved by his encounter with Jenny. In awe of her understanding and emotional engagement with her keeper, Darwin reflected on the profound similarities between humans and animals. Darwin's observations led him to question human arrogance and our perceived superiority over other species. He marveled at Jenny's expressive whines, her intelligence when spoken to, and her affection towards those she knew. But it was not just these positive emotions that struck Darwin; he also witnessed firsthand her passion, rage, sulkiness, even actions of despair. In this thought-provoking artwork by Paul D. Stewart from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of the complex range of emotions that exist within all living beings. It challenges us to reconsider our place in nature and recognize that our origins may lie closer to animals than we care to admit. This illustration serves as a powerful symbol for evolution and human self-reflection – a reminder that humility is key when contemplating our existence alongside other creatures on this planet. Let us embrace this visual journey into the depths of emotion and ponder upon what it truly means to be part of the intricate web of life.
