1846 Victorian Trilobite litho Phacops

Phacops latifrons enrolled and open, Plate 2. From " Organization of the Trilobites" by Hermann Burmeister, appearing in the Ray Society translation of his work published in 1846. The Illustrations and engravings by A. Andorff of Berlin were the finest and most accurate fossil representations of invertebrates up to that time. The work marked a more rigorous approach to the morphology of these groups and a move away from a purely stratiographical approach. The fine lithographic quality of the print owed much to the use of fine Solnhofen limestones that themselves preserved many fine fossils. Fossils such as Archaeopteryx were revealed during quarry work for the raw printing material

Devonian Engraving Fossil Lithograph Morphology Solnhofen Trilobite Victorian Phacops

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of scientific history - the 1846 Victorian Trilobite litho Phacops. Plate 2 from Hermann Burmeister's groundbreaking work, "Organization of the Trilobites" this illustration revolutionized our understanding of invertebrate morphology. Engraved by A. Andorff of Berlin, these illustrations were hailed as the pinnacle of accuracy and finesse in representing fossils at that time. The use of fine Solnhofen limestones, known for their exceptional preservation qualities, contributed to the lithograph's exquisite quality. Burmeister's work marked a significant shift away from a purely stratigraphical approach towards a more rigorous examination of trilobite morphology. This breakthrough allowed scientists to delve deeper into the intricate details and structures within these ancient creatures. It is worth noting that during quarry work for printing materials like Solnhofen limestone, astonishing finds such as Archaeopteryx were unexpectedly unearthed. These discoveries further enriched our knowledge about prehistoric life forms beyond what was initially anticipated. Paul D. Stewart's expertly captured photograph not only immortalizes this iconic artwork but also pays homage to its historical significance within the field of paleontology. It serves as a reminder that even centuries-old illustrations continue to inspire awe and curiosity among both scientists and art enthusiasts alike.
