1846 Victorian Trilobite Platycephalus

Asaphus platycephalus, Plate 2. From " Organization of the Trilobites" by Hermann Burmeister, appearing in the Ray Society translation of his work published in 1846. The Illustrations and engravings by A. Andorff of Berlin were the finest and most accurate fossil representations of invertebrates up to that time. The work marked a more rigorous approach to the morphology of these groups and a move away from a purely stratiographical approach. The fine lithographic quality of the print owed much to the use of fine Solnhofen limestones that themselves preserved many fine fossils. Fossils such as Archaeopteryx were revealed during quarry work for the raw printing material

Engraving Fossil Lithograph Morphology Ordovician Solnhofen Trilobite Victorian

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century lithograph, titled "1846 Victorian Trilobite Platycephalus" is a remarkable piece of scientific artistry. Created by A. Andorff of Berlin for Hermann Burmeister's groundbreaking work, "Organization of the Trilobites" it showcases the finest and most accurate fossil representations of invertebrates up until that time. The print features Asaphus platycephalus, a species belonging to the trilobite family. These ancient arthropods thrived during the Ordovician period and left behind an incredible fossil record. Burmeister's work marked a significant shift in studying these creatures, as he adopted a more rigorous approach to their morphology rather than solely focusing on stratigraphy. What makes this lithograph truly exceptional is its use of fine Solnhofen limestones as printing material. These stones not only provided excellent lithographic quality but also preserved numerous exquisite fossils themselves. It was during quarry work for these raw materials that extraordinary finds like Archaeopteryx were uncovered. Paul D. Stewart's expertly captured photograph highlights every intricate detail and delicate line engraving present in this historical artwork. The image transports us back to the Victorian era when scientific exploration flourished alongside artistic expression. This print serves as a testament to both human curiosity and ingenuity—a beautiful fusion of science and art that continues to inspire awe even after centuries have passed since its creation.
