1888 color lithograph Jurassic solnhofen
Vivid colour lithograph for " Dr. Schuberts Naturgeschichte - Geologie, Mineralreich, Palaontologie". Published 1888 in Stuttgart by J.F. Shreiber. The palaeontology section by Dr. Friedrich Rolle. German lithographers dominated colour lithography with their high volume productions such as this book for Children. The late Jurassic Solnhofen limestone blocks used to lithograph these German prints sometimes contained finely preserved fossils of the very animals they illustrated. Note, for example, Archaeopteryx in the sky above - itself discovered in Solnhofen and Rhamphorhynchus on the rock left in foreground. Indeed the first discovery of these delicate animals is owed largely to the use of these fine-grained rocks in lithographic printing

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 1888 color lithograph, part of "Dr. Schuberts Naturgeschichte - Geologie, Mineralreich, Palaontologie" showcases the remarkable talent of German lithographers in the late 19th century. Published by J. F. Shreiber in Stuttgart, this vivid print exemplifies their mastery of color lithography and their dedication to producing educational materials for children. The use of Solnhofen limestone blocks as a canvas for these prints adds an intriguing twist to this artwork. These rocks often contained exquisitely preserved fossils that were depicted in great detail on the lithographs themselves. In fact, it was thanks to these fine-grained rocks used in lithographic printing that delicate creatures like Archaeopteryx and Rhamphorhynchus were first discovered. As we gaze upon this panorama illustration, we are transported back to prehistoric times when dinosaurs roamed Bavaria's ancient landscapes. The scene is brought to life with meticulous attention to detail – from the majestic plesiosaur swimming gracefully through the waters to the soaring Archaeopteryx gracing the sky above. This art piece not only serves as a stunning visual representation but also highlights the scientific significance behind its creation. Driven by curiosity and passion for paleontology, Dr. Friedrich Rolle curated an exceptional palaeontology section within "Dr. Schuberts Naturgeschichte". Through his collaboration with skilled German lithographers, he successfully merged artistry and science into one extraordinary work. Paul D. Stewart's photograph beautifully captures this historic print while inviting us to appreciate both its artistic merit and scientific importance alike.
