EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of aviation - the construction of the USS Akron (ZRS-4), an awe-inspiring helium-filled rigid airship. The image showcases the delicate process of attaching the nose section to this colossal vessel, which would go on to become a flying aircraft carrier for F9C Sparrowhawk fighter planes. Built by the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation using lightweight aluminum alloy duralumin, the USS Akron was an engineering marvel of its time. Launched on August 8th, 1931, it proudly served for 18 months before tragedy struck. On April 4th, 1933, while battling a fierce storm off New Jersey's coast, disaster befell this majestic airship as it broke apart. This devastating event resulted in one of the largest losses of life in any airship crash - seventy-three out of seventy-six souls perished. The photograph not only showcases the magnitude and grandeur of this naval behemoth but also serves as a poignant reminder of both human ingenuity and vulnerability when faced with nature's wrath. As we delve into this monochrome snapshot from North America's past, we are transported back to an era where constructing such magnificent aerial vessels pushed boundaries and captivated imaginations. Preserved by US NATIONAL ARCHIVES/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this historical artifact stands as a testament to our relentless pursuit of progress within aviation and serves as a solemn tribute to those who lost their lives aboard this ill-fated airship.
