This print captures a significant moment in aviation history - the construction of the USS Akron (ZRS-4), an awe-inspiring helium-filled rigid airship. The image showcases the first main frame of this colossal vessel being delicately pulled into place, symbolizing the remarkable engineering feat that was about to unfold. Built by the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation using lightweight aluminum alloy duralumin, the USS Akron served as a groundbreaking flying aircraft carrier for F9C Sparrowhawk fighter planes. Its immense size and capabilities made it an invaluable asset to the United States Navy during its service. Launched on August 8th, 1931, this magnificent airship soared through North American skies for 18 months before tragedy struck.
