Algae research
Algae research. Researcher from Solazyme Inc. USA, examining a petri dish from an incubation room containing different algae strains. Algae are photosynthesising micro-organisms. They convert carbon dioxide (CO2) into sugars, that are then metabolised into lipids, carbohydrates and proteins. Solazyme uses synthetic biology and genetic engineering to produce novel strains of algae. These are then cultivated in tanks of fermentation bioreactors. The algae are then processed to produce edible oils, novel compounds and biodiesel. They can also be dried for use as a fertiliser or animal feed or burned as biomass fuel. Photographed in 2008

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in algae research conducted by Solazyme Inc. , an innovative company based in the USA. In this image, a dedicated researcher is seen carefully examining a petri dish containing various strains of algae within an incubation room. Algae, as photosynthesizing micro-organisms, possess the remarkable ability to convert carbon dioxide into sugars that are then metabolized into lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Solazyme utilizes cutting-edge techniques such as synthetic biology and genetic engineering to develop novel strains of algae. These unique specimens are cultivated in tanks known as fermentation bioreactors. Once grown, the algae undergoes meticulous processing to extract edible oils, novel compounds, and biodiesel. Additionally, they can be dried for use as fertilizers or animal feed or even burned as biomass fuel. Photographed back in 2008 during a time when renewable energy was gaining momentum worldwide; this image showcases the dedication of scientists towards finding sustainable solutions for our planet's growing needs. It highlights how Solazyme's research extends beyond commercial applications to explore alternative uses for algae such as biofuels and clean energy sources. The photograph serves not only as a reminder of humanity's ongoing quest for renewable resources but also emphasizes the crucial role played by genetics and biochemical advancements in achieving these goals. With its rich symbolism encompassing science, innovation, and environmental consciousness - this image stands testament to mankind's unwavering commitment towards building a greener future.
