Andromeda constellations, 1829 C016 / 4389

Andromeda constellations. 19th-century map of stars and constellations from the celestial atlas Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh (1829) by Kornelius Reissig, an Associate Member of the Russian Academy Sciences in St. Petersburg. The title translates as: Presentation of constellations in 30 tables. This was the earliest Russian star atlas, and was based on earlier work by Bode (1806) and Flamsteed (1776). The constellations are labelled in Cyrillic, represented by mythological figures and animals. This is Plate 3, showing the constellations of Andromeda and Triangulum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a piece of astronomical history, taking us back to the 19th century. Titled "Andromeda constellations, 1829 C016 / 4389" this image features Plate 3 from Kornelius Reissig's celestial atlas, "Sozviezdiia Predstavlennyia na XXX Tablitsakh". As the earliest Russian star atlas, it draws inspiration from earlier works by Bode and Flamsteed. Against a striking black background adorned with gold leaf accents, this historical illustration presents an intricate grid-like map of stars and constellations. The Cyrillic labels add a touch of cultural uniqueness as mythological figures and animals come alive through their representation in the night sky. Punched holes on the plate indicate precise coordinates for each celestial body, making it not only visually stunning but also scientifically valuable. This artwork serves as both an educational tool and a testament to humanity's fascination with the cosmos. Preserved by the Library of Congress/Science Photo Library, this print allows us to appreciate the meticulous craftsmanship that went into creating such detailed celestial cartography.
