EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the distinguished figure of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, the 3rd Earl Shaftsbury. A prominent English politician and writer of the late 17th to early 18th century, Ashley-Cooper's intellectual contributions left an indelible mark on philosophy and moral theory. Born in London and educated at Winchester College, Ashley-Cooper embarked on a journey across Europe before returning to his homeland to pursue a career in parliament. However, his struggle with asthma compelled him to seek respite from London's polluted air through numerous trips abroad, eventually leading him to retire in Holland. In 1711, he anonymously published his magnum opus titled "Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times" which revolutionized philosophical thought by introducing the concept of the Moral Sense. This groundbreaking idea challenged Thomas Hobbes' egotistical perspective and laid the foundation for subsequent ethical theories. The engraving featured in this print first appeared in the renowned 1744 edition of "Characteristicks". Its vertical composition captures Ashley-Cooper's dignified presence as he gazes into eternity with wisdom etched upon his countenance. Todd-White Art Photography masterfully brings this historical figure back to life through their lens. With meticulous attention to detail and a monochrome palette that accentuates every line and contour, they have immortalized Anthony Ashley-Cooper as both an influential politician and philosopher who forever shaped our understanding of morality.
