Antonov and his glider. Soviet aircraft designer Oleg Antonov (1906-1984, pilot) preparing for the test flight of his first glider in August 1923. Antonov was only 17 at the time. In his 20s, he gained fame as a designer of gliders, and in 1930, he was invited to Moscow to organise the Central Glider design bureau. He developed his first powered glider in 1936. In 1946, he was appointed head of a new Soviet aircraft design bureau that later became the Antonov ASTC aircraft design company, named in his honour. Photographed at Saratov, Russia
