Augustin Jean Fresnel, French physicist

Augustin Jean Fresnel (1788-1827), French physicist. Fresnel qualified as an engineer, but was temporarily removed from his government post in 1815 for supporting the Royalists against Napoleon. During this time he conducted experiments into light. He researched interference and polarisation effects, showing that light must be in the form of transverse waves, as Young & Huygens had suggested, rather than longitudinal waves, like sound. Fresnel also applied his skills to the development of lenses for lighthouses

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Augustin Jean Fresnel, a renowned French physicist who left an indelible mark on the world of science. Born in 1788, Fresnel initially pursued engineering but found himself embroiled in political turmoil when he supported the Royalists against Napoleon, leading to a temporary removal from his government post in 1815. It was during this period that he delved into groundbreaking experiments on light. Fresnel's research focused on interference and polarization effects, which ultimately revolutionized our understanding of light as transverse waves rather than longitudinal waves akin to sound. His profound insights aligned with the theories proposed by Young and Huygens, solidifying his place among scientific luminaries. Not content with theoretical discoveries alone, Fresnel also applied his expertise to practical applications – namely developing lenses for lighthouses. These innovative optical devices played a pivotal role in enhancing maritime safety during the 18th and 19th centuries. Through this vividly colored illustration capturing Fresnel's likeness, we are transported back in time to witness the brilliance of this pioneering inventor and scientist. His contributions continue to shape our modern understanding of physics and optics today.
