Avian flu. Conceptual computer artwork depicting a giant rooster standing
Avian flu. Conceptual computer artwork depicting a giant rooster standing on top of the Earth. Avian flu is a viral disease of poultry. The H5N1 strain of the avian influenza virus first appeared in humans in South-East-Asia in 1997. Between 2003 and 2005 it killed over 60 people. In April 2006 the first case of bird flu was confirmed in the UK. The virus is contracted by close contact with infected birds, although it cannot be contracted by eating meat or eggs. Also, as yet, H5N1 cannot be transferred between humans through the air as human flu viruses can. There are fears that the virus may mutate into a human transmissible form, which could lead to millions of deaths worldwide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library captures the essence of the avian flu, a viral disease that has caused global concern. The artwork portrays a colossal rooster standing atop planet Earth, symbolizing the dominance and threat posed by this infectious condition. Avian flu, also known as bird flu, emerged in humans in Southeast Asia back in 1997. Its H5N1 strain claimed over 60 lives between 2003 and 2005. In April 2006, the UK confirmed its first case of bird flu. While close contact with infected birds is the primary mode of transmission, it cannot be contracted through consuming poultry products. The image reflects both danger and fear surrounding this virus's potential to mutate into a form transmissible between humans—a development that could result in millions of deaths worldwide. However, unlike human influenza viruses, H5N1 cannot currently spread through airborne transmission. With elements like reflection and domination depicted within this illustration, it evokes feelings of hysteria and paranoia associated with an epidemic outbreak. This visual representation serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against infectious diseases while highlighting the importance of vigilance in public health measures. Incorporating microbiology and virology concepts alongside medical advancements made during the twenty-first century, this conceptual computer artwork encapsulates both scientific knowledge and artistic expression to raise awareness about avian flu's potential impact on our world.
