Biosphere 2, Arizona, USA C013 / 7745

Biosphere 2. This closed-system research facility was built in the 1980s to study ecological systems and the possibility of using closed biospheres in space exploration. At left is the rainforest biome and at centre is the human habitat, which contained the living quarters and laboratories. The complex also included ocean, savannah, marsh, desert and agricultural biomes. Two missions between 1991 and 1994, with groups of scientists closed in Biosphere 2 living off of only its resources, failed due to lack of oxygen and food. In 1995 the aims of the research were changed, to study how induced changes in the climate affected the ecosystems. Biosphere 1 is Earth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Biosphere 2, a groundbreaking closed-system research facility located in Arizona, USA. Constructed in the 1980s, this unique facility aimed to study ecological systems and explore the potential use of closed biospheres in space exploration. The image captures the rainforest biome on the left and the human habitat at its center, which housed living quarters and laboratories for scientists. Biosphere 2 encompassed various biomes including ocean, savannah, marsh, desert, and agricultural areas. However, despite its ambitious goals, two missions conducted between 1991 and 1994 faced challenges such as oxygen depletion and food scarcity that led to their failure. Undeterred by setbacks, researchers shifted their focus in 1995 to investigate how induced climate changes affected ecosystems within Biosphere 2. Referred to as "Biosphere 1" planet Earth served as an inspiration for this innovative project. This historical photograph not only highlights the architectural marvel of Biosphere 2 but also emphasizes its significance in climatology research. With keywords like ecology, terrariums, ecosystems, and climate change research associated with it; this image provides a glimpse into humanity's quest for understanding our environment's intricate workings. Captured by LIBRARY OF CONGRESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY (not affiliated with any commercial entity), this print serves as a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our world while pushing boundaries beyond conventional scientific practices.
