Blood clot, light micrograph

Blood clot. Light micrograph of a section through an arterial thrombus. Blood clots can form in an intact vessel that contains fatty deposits or one that is inflamed. These clots, known as thrombi, cause pain and may damage the tissues served by the vessel. They can be fatal in some cases. Anticoagulants such as warfarin and heparin help inhibit the further growth of the thrombi and prevent new clots from forming. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate details of a blood clot, providing a glimpse into the dangers that can lurk within our circulatory system. The light micrograph showcases a section through an arterial thrombus, revealing how these clots form in vessels containing fatty deposits or experiencing inflammation. Thrombi, as they are known, not only cause excruciating pain but also pose significant risks to the tissues served by the affected vessel. In some cases, they can even be fatal. However, modern medicine offers hope in the form of anticoagulants like warfarin and heparin. These medications help inhibit further growth of thrombi and prevent new clots from forming. The magnification used for this print is x100 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, allowing us to appreciate every minute detail of this natural pattern formed by red blood cells coagulating together. Steve Gschmeisner's expertise in medical illustration shines through as he presents this full-frame transmission electron micrograph with precision and clarity. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of maintaining good health and seeking appropriate medical care when necessary. It highlights both the fragility and resilience of our bodies while emphasizing the critical role played by healthcare professionals in combating arterial disease.
