Bogolyubov (right), Soviet physicist
Soviet nuclear physicists. At right, Nikolai Nikolaevich Bogolyubov (1909-1992), the Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), is talking to one of his students Albert Nikiforovitch Tavkhelidze (born 1932). Bogolyubov, born in Russia and educated in the Ukraine, was a mathematician and physicist who from the 1960s studied quarks and quantum colour charge. He was director of JINR, at Dubna, near Moscow, Russia, from 1965-1988. Tavkhelidze was born in Georgia, and worked at JINR from 1956-1970. From 1970-1986, he was a professor at Moscow State University, and continued to work at JINR. Photographed in Dubna on 18 September 1980

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical photo captures a significant moment in the world of Soviet nuclear physics. On the right, we see Nikolai Nikolaevich Bogolyubov, a renowned physicist and mathematician who served as the Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) from 1965 to 1988. Engaged in an animated conversation with him is his student Albert Nikiforovitch Tavkhelidze, born in Georgia. Taken on September 18,1980, at JINR's headquarters in Dubna near Moscow, this image showcases the intellectual exchange between two brilliant minds. Bogolyubov dedicated his research to studying quarks and quantum colour charge during the 1960s. Meanwhile, Tavkhelidze made significant contributions to nuclear physics throughout his career. The photograph not only highlights their academic achievements but also provides insight into their personal backgrounds. Bogolyubov was born in Russia but received his education in Ukraine before becoming a prominent figure within Soviet science administration. Tavkhelidze hails from Georgia and worked at JINR until 1970 when he joined Moscow State University as a professor while continuing his involvement with JINR. This portrait serves as a testament to their dedication to scientific exploration and collaboration during an era marked by groundbreaking discoveries in particle physics.
