EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Bonaventura Vulcanius, a renowned Dutch humanist who lived from 1538 to 1614. Born in Bruges to a lawyer, Vulcanius received his education at Ghent and Leuven before studying under Cassander at Cologne. He later served as secretary to nobility in Spain until 1570 when he was appointed professor of Greek at Cologne. Vulcanius's passion for knowledge led him to work for printers in Basel and Geneva, where he translated works by the ancient historian Arrian. Eventually, he found his true calling as a professor of Greek at Leiden University. For the next three decades, Vulcanius dedicated himself to teaching future scholars such as Heinsius and Grotius. This mesmerizing engraving captures the essence of Vulcanius's intellectual prowess and dedication to academia. Its monochrome aesthetic adds an air of timelessness that reflects both the era in which he lived (16th-17th century) and his enduring influence on Dutch humanism. As we gaze upon this vertical image, we are transported back in time, witnessing the legacy of a remarkable teacher and translator whose impact still resonates today. This print is part of Science Photo Library's collection titled "Illustris Academia Lugd-Batava" printed in Leiden during 1613—an invaluable piece capturing an important chapter in history.
