Brent Dalrymple, US geologist
Brent Dalrymple (born 1937), US geologist. Dalrymple is adjusting a mass spectrometer vacuum flight tube. Mass spectrometers accurately detect the mass of molecules of a sample. Dalrymple and others worked in the 1960s on geomagnetic reversals, developing the timescales allowing magnetic changes in rocks to be used for geological dating. This work was carried out at the US Geological Survey, Rock Magnetics Laboratory, Menlo Park, California, USA, where this photograph was taken in 1971. Dalrymple received the National Medal of Science in 2003 for his work. This photograph is part of the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Brent Dalrymple, a renowned US geologist, in his element during the early 1970s. The image showcases Dalrymple's expertise as he adjusts a mass spectrometer vacuum flight tube at the Rock Magnetics Laboratory in Menlo Park, California. Mass spectrometers play a crucial role in accurately detecting the molecular mass of samples, making them invaluable tools for scientific analysis. Dalrymple's significant contributions to the field of geology are highlighted by his groundbreaking work on geomagnetic reversals during this era. Alongside other dedicated scientists, he developed timescales that allowed magnetic changes within rocks to be utilized for geological dating purposes. This pivotal research was conducted at the prestigious US Geological Survey (USGS), where this snapshot was taken. In recognition of his exceptional achievements, Dalrymple was honored with the National Medal of Science in 2003. His dedication to advancing our understanding of Earth's history through geochemistry and mass spectrometry has left an indelible mark on scientific exploration. Preserved as part of the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) collection by Library of Congress, this photograph serves as a testament to both Dalrymple's pioneering spirit and the technological advancements that have shaped modern geology. It is a powerful reminder of how human ingenuity combined with cutting-edge equipment can unlock profound insights into our planet's past and pave the way for future discoveries.
