Bubble tip anemone
Bubble tip anemone. Close-up of the fluorescent tentacles of a bubble tip anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor). The tentacles are usually a dull brown, but this anemone is partially bleached and has lost most of the endosymbiotic zooxanthellae, which results in the pretty colour. However, this is not good for the anemone, since it is dependant on the assimilation products of the zooxanthellae as its major food source. Photographed off Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of a Bubble tip anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) in stunning detail. The close-up shot reveals the fluorescent tentacles of this unique creature, which are typically a dull brown color. However, due to partial bleaching and loss of endosymbiotic zooxanthellae, the anemone displays a vibrant and eye-catching hue. While the colorful transformation is visually appealing, it signifies an underlying issue for the anemone's health. This particular specimen heavily relies on assimilation products from zooxanthellae as its primary source of food. With most of these vital organisms lost, the anemone faces challenges in obtaining sustenance. Photographed off Raja Ampat in West Papua, Indonesia – a region known for its rich marine biodiversity – this image captures both the allure and vulnerability of oceanic fauna. It highlights how environmental factors can impact delicate ecosystems such as coral reefs. The photograph not only offers a glimpse into the intricate world of underwater biology but also serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences on fragile aquatic life forms like cnidarians. As we appreciate their natural splendor through Georgette Douwma's lens, let us strive to protect and preserve these invaluable treasures for future generations to admire and study within Southeast Asia's marine biology realm.
