Campanularia hydrozoan, light micrograph

Campanularia hydrozoan. Polarised light micrograph of a hydroid colony of Campanularia polyps. The branches of the stem give rise to either feeding polyps (hydranths, one at bottom centre) surrounded by a cup (hydrotheca), or reproductive polyps (one at left and one at right) in a closed flask (gonotheca). The reproductive polyps bud off circular medusae (young polyps), which are either male or female. The mature medusae are then liberated into the sea. The large gonotheca at left is breaking open and releasing medusae. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Campanularia hydrozoan, a fascinating marine creature. Under polarised light, the hydroid colony of Campanularia polyps reveals its complex structure and reproductive process. The branches of the stem give rise to two types of polyps: feeding polyps surrounded by a cup called hydrotheca, and reproductive polyps enclosed in a closed flask known as gonotheca. In this image, we witness the moment when the large gonotheca on the left is breaking open, releasing circular medusae into their aquatic habitat. These young polyps will eventually develop into mature male or female medusae before being set free in the sea. It's a mesmerizing sight that highlights nature's incredible ability to perpetuate life. With a magnification of x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across, this micrograph allows us to appreciate every detail of these delicate organisms. From their anatomical features to their unique method of reproduction, this photograph offers valuable insights into the world of coelenterates and marine biology. Whether you are passionate about zoology or simply intrigued by Earth's diverse fauna, this stunning print from Science Photo Library is sure to captivate your imagination and spark curiosity about these remarkable invertebrates.
