EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph from the Galerie medicale collection showcases the portrait of Celsus, a remarkable Roman encyclopaedist who lived during the first centuries BC and AD. Aulus Cornelius Celsus dedicated his life to collecting and preserving Greek knowledge, ultimately publishing it in eight books. Although only one volume on medicine has survived through time, its significance cannot be overstated. Discovered in 1426 and published in 1478, this invaluable work was based on the teachings of Hippocrates' school. Within its pages, Celsus described various groundbreaking medical procedures such as tonsillectomy and provided detailed accounts of heart attacks, insanity, and cataracts for the very first time. Pierre Roch Vigneron's monochrome artwork beautifully captures the essence of this historical figure. The portrait portrays a distinguished European male with an air of wisdom emanating from his head and shoulders. This depiction transports us back to ancient Rome, allowing us to glimpse into a bygone era where knowledge was diligently transmitted across generations. Celsus' contributions to medicine have left an indelible mark on human history. His meticulous documentation serves as a testament to his dedication towards advancing medical understanding during antiquity. As we observe this image today, we are reminded not only of Celsus' immense influence but also of our own responsibility to preserve and transmit knowledge for future generations.
